- Kapitel 44 -

Deliver us

(Romans 8:35-39)

Unto the end. To the sons of Korah, toward understanding.

We have heard, O God, with our own ears. Our fathers have announced to us the work that you wrought in their days and in the days of antiquity.

Your hand dispersed the Gentiles, and you transplanted them. You afflicted a people, and you expelled them.

For they did not take possession of the land by their sword, and their own arm did not save them. But your right hand and your arm, and the light of your countenance did so, because you were pleased with them.

You yourself are my king and my God, who commands the salvation of Jacob.

With you, we will brandish a horn before our enemies; and in your name, we will spurn those rising up against us.(a)

For I will not hope in my bow, and my sword will not save me.

For you have saved us from those who afflict us, and you have bewildered those who hate us.

In God, we will give praise all day long; and in your name, we will confess forever.

But now, you have rejected and bewildered us, and you will not go forth with our armies, O God.(b)

You have turned our back to our enemies, and those who hated us have plundered for themselves.

You have given us over like sheep for food. You have scattered us among the Gentiles.

You have sold your people without a price, and no great number was exchanged for them.(c)

You have set us as a disgrace to our neighbors, a scoff and a derision to those who are around us.

You have set us as a parable among the Gentiles, a shaking of the head among the peoples.

All day long my shame is before me, and the confusion of my face has covered me,

before the voice of the reproacher and the commentator, before the face of the adversary and the pursuer.

All these things have come upon us, yet we have not forgotten you, and we have not acted unjustly in your covenant.

And our heart has not turned back. And you have not diverted our steps from your way.

For you humbled us in a place of affliction, and the shadow of death has covered us.

If we have forgotten the name of our God, and if we have extended our hands to a foreign god,

will not God find this out? For he knows the secrets of the heart. For, because of you, we are being killed all day long. We are considered as sheep for the slaughter.

Rise up. Why do you fall asleep, O Lord? Rise up, and do not reject us in the end.

Why do you turn your face away, and why do you forget our needfulness and our tribulation?

For our soul has been humbled into the dust. Our belly has been bound to the earth.

Rise up, O Lord. Help us and redeem us, because of your name.

(a)43:6 The word ‘ventilabimus’ refers to waving a fan in order to start a fire; it also can refer to brandishing a weapon. The figure of a horn is used to represent a weapon, since horned animals uses their horns as weapons.(Conte)

(c)43:13 This last phrase could mean that no great amount of money (or wealth) was given in exchange for them, or that there was no great crowd of people given in exchange for them. Zum Ende von den Söhnen Kores, zur Unterweisung.

O Gott! mit unsern Ohren haben wir gehört, unsere Väter haben uns erzählt die Großtaten, die du vollbracht in ihren Tagen und in den Tagen der Vorzeit.

deine Hand vertrieb die Völker und du pflanztest sie dafür ein, du züchtigtest die Völker, sie aber ließest du emporwachsen.

Denn nicht durch ihr Schwert haben sie das Land in Besitz genommen und ihr Arm hat ihnen nicht Heil geschafft, sondern deine Rechte und dein Arm und das Licht deines Angesichtes, denn du hattest an ihnen Wohlgefallen.

Du bist ja mein König und mein Gott, der Heil entbietet in Jakob.

Durch dich stoßen wir unsere Feinde nieder und durch deinen Namen verachten wir die, welche sich wider uns erheben.

Denn nicht auf meinen Bogen setze ich mein Vertrauen und mein Schwert kann mir nicht Rettung bringen,

sondern du befreist uns von unsern Drängern und machst sie zuschanden, die uns hassen.

Gottes rühmen wir uns allezeit und deinen Namen preisen wir ewiglich.

Jetzt aber hast du uns verstoßen und zuschanden gemacht und ziehest, o Gott! nicht aus mit unsern Heeren.

Du lässest uns zurückweichen vor unsern Feinden, und die uns hassen, haben sich Beute gewonnen.

Du gabst uns dahin wie Schlachtschafe und zerstreutest uns unter die Völker.

Du hast dein Volk verkauft für nichts und es war kein Gewinn bei seiner Dahingabe.

Du hast uns zum Gespött gemacht bei unsern Nachbarn, zum Spott und Gelächter bei denen, die um uns her sind.

Du machtest uns zum Sprichwort den Heiden, zum Gegenstand des Kopfschüttelns unter den Völkern.

Den ganzen Tag steht meine Schmach vor mir und Schamröte bedeckt mein Angesicht

ob der Stimme des Höhnenden und Beschimpfenden, im Angesichte des Feindes und Verfolgers.

Dies alles ist über uns gekommen, obschon wir deiner nicht vergessen und nicht treulos gehandelt hatten an deinem Bunde.

Unser Herz ist nicht zurückgewichen, dennoch ließest du unsere Pfade von deinem Wege abweichen.

Denn du hast uns niedergebeugt an der Stätte der Trübsal und Todesschatten hat uns bedeckt.

Wenn wir des Namens unsers Gottes vergessen und unsere Hände ausgestreckt hätten zu einem andern Gott,

würde Gott dies nicht erforschen? Er kennt ja die Geheimnisse des Herzens. Um deinetwillen werden wir immerfort hingewürgt, werden geachtet wie Schlachtschafe.

Wache auf! Warum schläfst du, Herr? Wache auf und verwirf uns nicht auf immerdar!

Warum wendest du dein Antlitz ab, vergissest unseres Elendes und unserer Drangsal?

Denn bis zum Staube ist unsere Seele gebeugt, es fleht am Boden unser Leib.

Erhebe dich, o Herr! hilf uns und erlöse um deines Namens willen.
