- Kapitel 41 -

And it came to pass at the end of two full years, that Pharaoh dreamed: and, behold, he stood by the river.

And, behold, there came up out of the river seven well favoured kine and fatfleshed; and they fed in a meadow.

And, behold, seven other kine came up after them out of the river, ill favoured and leanfleshed; and stood by the other kine upon the brink of the river.

And the ill favoured and leanfleshed kine did eat up the seven well favoured and fat kine. So Pharaoh awoke.

And he slept and dreamed the second time: and, behold, seven ears of corn came up upon one stalk, rank and good.(a)

And, behold, seven thin ears and blasted with the east wind sprung up after them.

And the seven thin ears devoured the seven rank and full ears. And Pharaoh awoke, and, behold, it was a dream.

And it came to pass in the morning that his spirit was troubled; and he sent and called for all the magicians of Egypt, and all the wise men thereof: and Pharaoh told them his dream; but there was none that could interpret them unto Pharaoh.

Then spake the chief butler unto Pharaoh, saying, I do remember my faults this day:

Pharaoh was wroth with his servants, and put me in ward in the captain of the guard’s house, both me and the chief baker:

And we dreamed a dream in one night, I and he; we dreamed each man according to the interpretation of his dream.

And there was there with us a young man, an Hebrew, servant to the captain of the guard; and we told him, and he interpreted to us our dreams; to each man according to his dream he did interpret.

And it came to pass, as he interpreted to us, so it was; me he restored unto mine office, and him he hanged.

Joseph Interprets Pharaoh’s Dreams

Then Pharaoh sent and called Joseph, and they brought him hastily out of the dungeon: and he shaved himself, and changed his raiment, and came in unto Pharaoh.(b)

And Pharaoh said unto Joseph, I have dreamed a dream, and there is none that can interpret it: and I have heard say of thee, that thou canst understand a dream to interpret it.(c)

And Joseph answered Pharaoh, saying, It is not in me: God shall give Pharaoh an answer of peace.

And Pharaoh said unto Joseph, In my dream, behold, I stood upon the bank of the river:

And, behold, there came up out of the river seven kine, fatfleshed and well favoured; and they fed in a meadow:

And, behold, seven other kine came up after them, poor and very ill favoured and leanfleshed, such as I never saw in all the land of Egypt for badness:

And the lean and the ill favoured kine did eat up the first seven fat kine:

And when they had eaten them up, it could not be known that they had eaten them; but they were still ill favoured, as at the beginning. So I awoke.(d)

And I saw in my dream, and, behold, seven ears came up in one stalk, full and good:

And, behold, seven ears, withered, thin, and blasted with the east wind, sprung up after them:(e)

And the thin ears devoured the seven good ears: and I told this unto the magicians; but there was none that could declare it to me.

And Joseph said unto Pharaoh, The dream of Pharaoh is one: God hath shewed Pharaoh what he is about to do.

The seven good kine are seven years; and the seven good ears are seven years: the dream is one.

And the seven thin and ill favoured kine that came up after them are seven years; and the seven empty ears blasted with the east wind shall be seven years of famine.

This is the thing which I have spoken unto Pharaoh: What God is about to do he sheweth unto Pharaoh.

Behold, there come seven years of great plenty throughout all the land of Egypt:

And there shall arise after them seven years of famine; and all the plenty shall be forgotten in the land of Egypt; and the famine shall consume the land;

And the plenty shall not be known in the land by reason of that famine following; for it shall be very grievous.(f)

And for that the dream was doubled unto Pharaoh twice; it is because the thing is established by God, and God will shortly bring it to pass.(g)

Now therefore let Pharaoh look out a man discreet and wise, and set him over the land of Egypt.

Let Pharaoh do this, and let him appoint officers over the land, and take up the fifth part of the land of Egypt in the seven plenteous years.(h)

And let them gather all the food of those good years that come, and lay up corn under the hand of Pharaoh, and let them keep food in the cities.

And that food shall be for store to the land against the seven years of famine, which shall be in the land of Egypt; that the land perish not through the famine.(i)

Joseph Given Charge of Egypt

And the thing was good in the eyes of Pharaoh, and in the eyes of all his servants.

And Pharaoh said unto his servants, Can we find such a one as this is, a man in whom the Spirit of God is?

And Pharaoh said unto Joseph, Forasmuch as God hath shewed thee all this, there is none so discreet and wise as thou art:

Thou shalt be over my house, and according unto thy word shall all my people be ruled: only in the throne will I be greater than thou.(j)

And Pharaoh said unto Joseph, See, I have set thee over all the land of Egypt.

And Pharaoh took off his ring from his hand, and put it upon Joseph’s hand, and arrayed him in vestures of fine linen, and put a gold chain about his neck;(k)

And he made him to ride in the second chariot which he had; and they cried before him, Bow the knee: and he made him ruler over all the land of Egypt.(l)

And Pharaoh said unto Joseph, I am Pharaoh, and without thee shall no man lift up his hand or foot in all the land of Egypt.

And Pharaoh called Joseph’s name Zaphnath–paaneah; and he gave him to wife Asenath the daughter of Poti–pherah priest of On. And Joseph went out over all the land of Egypt.(m)

The Seven Years of Plenty

And Joseph was thirty years old when he stood before Pharaoh king of Egypt. And Joseph went out from the presence of Pharaoh, and went throughout all the land of Egypt.

And in the seven plenteous years the earth brought forth by handfuls.

And he gathered up all the food of the seven years, which were in the land of Egypt, and laid up the food in the cities: the food of the field, which was round about every city, laid he up in the same.

And Joseph gathered corn as the sand of the sea, very much, until he left numbering; for it was without number.

And unto Joseph were born two sons before the years of famine came, which Asenath the daughter of Poti–pherah priest of On bare unto him.(o)

And Joseph called the name of the firstborn Manasseh: For God, said he, hath made me forget all my toil, and all my father’s house.(p)

And the name of the second called he Ephraim: For God hath caused me to be fruitful in the land of my affliction.(q)

The Famine Begins

And the seven years of plenteousness, that was in the land of Egypt, were ended.

And the seven years of dearth began to come, according as Joseph had said: and the dearth was in all lands; but in all the land of Egypt there was bread.

And when all the land of Egypt was famished, the people cried to Pharaoh for bread: and Pharaoh said unto all the Egyptians, Go unto Joseph; what he saith to you, do.

And the famine was over all the face of the earth: And Joseph opened all the storehouses, and sold unto the Egyptians; and the famine waxed sore in the land of Egypt.(r)

And all countries came into Egypt to Joseph for to buy corn; because that the famine was so sore in all lands.

Die Träume des Pharao

Zwei Jahre darauf hatte Pharao einen Traum. Es war ihm, er stehe am Strome,

und aus diesem stiegen sieben Kühe empor, überaus schön und fett; und sie weideten in den feuchten Gefilden.

Nach ihnen stiegen sieben andere Kühe aus dem Strome auf, hässlich und abgemagert; und sie weideten am Ufer des Stromes, auf grünenden Auen,

und verschlangen die Kühe, die wunderbar schön von Aussehen und fetten Leibes waren. Da erwachte Pharao.

Als er wieder eingeschlafen war, hatte er einen zweiten Traum: Sieben Ähren wuchsen auf einem Halme, voll und schön.

Nach ihnen sproßten sieben andere Ähren, dünn und vom Glutwind verbrannt auf

und verschlangen die vorigen schönen Ähren. Da erwachte Pharao aus seinem Schlafe,

und als es Morgen geworden war, sandte er, von Schrecken überwältigt, zu allen Wahrsagern und allen Weisen Ägyptens, ließ sie kommen, und erzählte ihnen seinen Traum. Doch keiner war da, der ihn ausgelegt hätte.

Da erst erinnerte sich der Obermundschenk und sprach: Ich bekenne mein Vergehen:

Als der König auf seine Knechte zürnte, ließ er mich und den Oberbäcker in den Kerker des Anführers der Leibwache werfen.

Dort hatten wir beide in einer Nacht einen Traum, der Künftiges bedeutete.

Nun war daselbst ein hebräischer Jüngling, ein Diener eben des Befehlshabers der Leibwache; diesem erzählten wir unsere Träume,

und wir hörten genau das, was nachher der Ausgang bestätigte; denn ich wurde wieder in mein Amt eingesetzt, und jener ward an das Kreuz gehängt.

Da ward Joseph zugleich auf das Geheiß des Königs aus dem Kerker herausgeführt, und nachdem sie ihn geschoren und ihm andere Kleider angetan hatten, brachten sie ihn vor den König.

Dieser sprach zu ihm: Ich habe Träume gehabt, und es ist keiner da, der sie auslegen kann. Nun habe ich von dir gehört, dass du sie sehr weise deutest.

Da antwortete Joseph: Nicht ich vermag es, Gott wird Pharao Heil bringende Antwort geben.

Nun erzählte Pharao, was er gesehen hatte: Es war mir, als stünde ich am Ufer des Flusses;

da stiegen sieben Kühe aus dem Strome herauf, überaus schön und fetten Leibes, diese weideten das feuchte Ufergras ab.

Und siehe, nach ihnen stiegen sieben andere Kühe herauf, so hässlich und mager, wie ich solche im Lande Ägypten niemals gesehen habe.

Diese fraßen und verschlangen die ersten,

und gleichwohl verriet nichts, dass sie gesättigt waren, sondern sie waren mager und hässlich, wie zuvor. Da erwachte ich, und wieder vom Schlafe überwältigt,

hatte ich diesen Traum: Sieben Ähren wuchsen an einem Halme sehr voll und schön.

Dann wuchsen aus dem Halme sieben andere hervor, dürr und vom Glutwind versengt.

und die dürren verschlangen die ersten schönen. Ich habe den Wahrsagern den Traum erzählt, aber keiner kann ihn auslegen.

Da antwortete Joseph: Der Traum des Königs ist ein und derselbe! Gott verkündigt dem Pharao, was er tun will.

Die sieben schönen Kühe und die sieben vollen Ähren sind sieben fruchtbare Jahre; und haben dieselbe Bedeutung im Traume.

Die sieben dürren und mageren Kühe, die nach ihnen heraufsteigen, und die sieben dünnen, vom Glutwind verbrannten Ähren sind sieben Jahre einer kommenden Hungersnot.

Die Jahre werden so aufeinander folgen:

Siehe, es werden sieben Jahre kommen, in denen im ganzen Lande Ägypten große Fruchtbarkeit herrscht;

nach diesen werden sieben andere Jahre von solcher Unfruchtbarkeit folgen, dass man des früheren Überflusses ganz vergessen wird, denn die Hungersnot wird das ganze Land aufreiben

und die Größe des Mangels wird die Größe des Überflusses vernichten.

Dass du aber einen Traum zweimal hattest, der dieselbe Sache betrifft, ist das Anzeichen der Gewissheit, mit der Gottes Verkündigung in Erfüllung geht und bald verwirklicht wird.

So sehe sich der König nun um einen weisen und tätigen Mann um und setze ihn über das Land Ägypten;

und dieser setze Aufseher über alle Landschaften und sammle den fünften Teil der Früchte während der sieben Jahre der Fruchtbarkeit,

die schon jetzt kommen werden, in Vorratshäuser auf, und alles Getreide werde mit Pharaos Vollmacht und in den Städten aufgeschüttet und aufbewahrt.

So werde ein Vorrat geschaffen für die sieben Jahre der Hungersnot, welche Ägypten bedrängen wird, und so wird das Land nicht durch Mangel zu Grunde gehen.

Josephs Aufstieg zur Macht

Dieser Rat gefiel dem Pharao und allen seinen Dienern wohl,

und er sprach zu ihnen: Könnten wir wohl einen Mann finden, der voll des Geistes Gottes ist, wie dieser?

So sprach er den zu Joseph: Weil Gott dir alles kundgetan hat, was du gesagt hast, könnte ich da wohl einen Mann finden, der weiser als du, oder dir vergleichbar wäre?

Du sollst über mein Haus gesetzt sein, und dem Befehle deines Mundes soll das gesamte Volk gehorchen; nur durch den Königsthron allein werde ich höher sein als du.

Und wiederum sprach Pharao zu Joseph: Siehe, ich setze dich über das ganze Land Ägypten.

Und er zog den Ring von seiner Hand, und steckte ihn an Josephs Hand, und ließ ihn mit einem Kleide von feinstem Linnen bekleiden, und legte eine goldene Kette um seinen Hals.

Alsdann ließ er ihn seinen zweiten Wagen besteigen, und durch einen Herold vor ihm her rufen, dass alle vor ihm ihre Kniee beugen und wissen sollten, dass er über das ganze Land Ägypten gesetzt sei.

Auch sprach der König zu Joseph: Ich bin Pharao; ohne deinen Willen soll niemand im ganzen Lande Ägypten Hand oder Fuß regen.

Und er änderte seinen Namen, und nannte ihn in ägyptischer Sprache Reiter der Welt, und gab ihm Aseneth, die Tochter des Putiphare, des Priesters von Heliopolis zum Weibe. So bereiste Joseph das Land Ägypten.

(dreißig Jahre war er alt, als er vor dem König Pharao stand,) und zog durch alle Landschaften Ägyptens.

Und es kam die Fruchtbarkeit der sieben Jahre, und die Früchte wurden in Garben gebunden und in die Vorratshäuser Ägyptens gesammelt,

und aller Überfluss der Früchte ward in den einzelnen Städten hinterlegt.

So groß war der Überfluss an Getreide, dass er dem Sande am Meere gleich wurde und vor Menge nicht mehr zu messen war.

Dem Joseph aber wurden, ehe die Hungersnot ausbrach, zwei Söhne geboren, welche ihm Aseneth, die Tochter Putiphares, des Priesters von Heliopolis gebar.

Und er nannte den Namen des Erstgeborenen Manasses, indem er sprach: Gott hat mich alle meine Mühsale und das Haus meines Vaters vergessen lassen.

Den Namen des zweiten nannte er Ephraim, denn er sprach: Gott hat mich fruchtbar gemacht im Lande meiner Armut.

Als nun die sieben Jahre des Überflusses in Ägypten vorübergegangen waren,

begannen die sieben Jahre der Not zu kommen, welche Joseph vorhergesagt hatte, und die Hungersnot nahm in allen Landen überhand, im ganzen Lande Ägypten aber war Brot.

Als nun auch dieses Hunger litt, rief das Volk zu Pharao um Nahrung. Er antwortete ihnen: Gehet zu Joseph; und alles, was er euch sagen wird, tuet!

Die Hungersnot aber nahm alle Tage im ganzen Lande zu; da öffnete Joseph alle Vorratshäuser und verkaufte den Ägyptern Getreide, denn auch sie drückte der Hunger hart.

Und alle Länder kamen nach Ägypten, um Getreide zu kaufen und der harten Not zu steuern.
