- Chapter 3 -

Remind them to submit to rulers and authorities, to obey them, to be ready for every good work.
2
Remind them to revile no one, to avoid arguing, to let other people have their way, and to show humility to all people.

For once we ourselves were thoughtless and disobedient. We were led astray and enslaved by various passions and pleasures. We lived in evil and envy. We were detestable and hated one another.
4
But when the kindness of God our savior and his love for mankind appeared,
5
it was not by works of righteousness that we did, but by his mercy that he saved us. He saved us through the washing of new birth and renewal by the Holy Spirit.
6
God richly poured the Holy Spirit on us through our Savior Jesus Christ.
7
He did this in order that, having been justified by his grace, we might become heirs through the confidence of eternal life.
8
This message is trustworthy. I want you to speak confidently about these things, so that those who trust God may be intent on the good works that he put before them. These things are good and profitable for all people.

Avoid Divisions

(Romans 16:17–20)

But avoid foolish debates and genealogies and strife and conflict about the law. Those things are worthless and unprofitable.
10
Reject anyone who is causing divisions among you, after one or two warnings,
11
and know that such a one has turned from the right way and is sinning and condemns himself.

Final Remarks and Greetings

When I send Artemas or Tychicus to you, hurry and come to me at Nicopolis, where I have decided to spend the winter.
13
Hurry and send Zenas, the expert in law, and Apollos, in a way that they lack nothing.
14
Our people must learn to engage in good works that meet urgent needs so that they may not be unfruitful.
15
All those who are with me greet you. Greet those who love us in faith. Grace be with all of you.

Remind them to be in subjection to rulers and to authorities, to be obedient, to be ready for every good work,

to speak evil of no one, not to be contentious, to be gentle, showing all humility toward all men.

For we were also once foolish, disobedient, deceived, serving various lusts and pleasures, living in malice and envy, hateful, and hating one another.
4
But when the kindness of God our Savior and his love toward mankind appeared,
5
not by works of righteousness which we did ourselves, but according to his mercy, he saved us through the washing of regeneration and renewing by the Holy Spirit,
6
whom he poured out on us richly through Jesus Christ our Savior;
7
that being justified by his grace, we might be made heirs according to the hope of eternal life.
8
This saying is faithful, and concerning these things I desire that you insist confidently, so that those who have believed God may be careful to maintain good works. These things are good and profitable to men;

but shun foolish questionings, genealogies, strife, and disputes about the law; for they are unprofitable and vain.

Avoid a factious man after a first and second warning,

knowing that such a one is perverted and sinful, being self-condemned.

When I send Artemas to you, or Tychicus, be diligent to come to me to Nicopolis, for I have determined to winter there.

Send Zenas the lawyer and Apollos on their journey speedily, that nothing may be lacking for them.

Let our people also learn to maintain good works to meet necessary needs, that they may not be unfruitful.
15
All who are with me greet you. Greet those who love us in faith. Grace be with you all. Amen.
